Frequently Asked Questions

What materials are used in the construction of your music boxes?

Our music boxes are crafted from a variety of high-quality materials, including exquisite woods, durable metals, and elegant glass. Each material is carefully chosen to enhance the aesthetic and acoustic properties of the collectible music box, ensuring a beautiful look and pure sound. Wood varieties include mahogany and walnut, metal options often feature stainless steel or gold plating, and our clear boxes are made with precision-cut glass.

Can I personalize a music box with my own choice of song?

Absolutely! Many of our music boxes come with the option to include a digital music module, allowing you to personalize your classic music box with any song of your choice. This can be a mainstream hit, a timeless classic, or even a personal composition. Visit our listening library to explore the possibilities, or contact us for assistance in creating your custom melody.

How is a music box crafted to ensure quality sound?

The crafting process of our music boxes is meticulous. Each collectible music box contains a precisely engineered mechanical movement where the raised pins on the rotating cylinder pluck the tuned teeth of a steel comb, creating the melody. Expert artisans adjust every component to ensure a harmonious and rich sound, guaranteeing a quality musical experience with every use.

What are the differences between mechanical and digital music boxes?

Mechanical music boxes produce sound acoustically through a metal comb and rotating cylinder mechanism, offering a traditional and nostalgic feel. Digital music boxes, on the other hand, use high-quality electronic modules that can play a vast range of songs, including personalized tracks. These custom modules are exclusively produced for Music Box Attic only. The choice between mechanical and digital depends on your preference for classic authenticity or modern versatility. If the song you want is not available on our regular list, the custom digital module is an amazing alternative to create it. Please remember that we can custom-make traditional mechanical movements too, but that requires more time (4 to 6 weeks) and costs a lot more.

How do I maintain my traditional music box to keep it in good condition?

Maintaining your collectible music box involves gentle handling and proper storage. Wind it regularly to keep the mechanism moving smoothly, but avoid over-winding and allow it to wind down at least halfway. Keep it away from extreme temperatures and humidity, and dust it lightly with a soft cloth. If your music box ever needs more than basic maintenance, it’s best to consult a professional to preserve its intricate workings.

Traditional Music Boxes

Although the specific inventor of the classic music box is unknown, the earliest music boxes can be traced back to Switzerland around the late 1700s. The mechanical movement, the heart and soul of the music box, consists of only a few pieces, including a rotating cylinder with raised pins, a comb with prongs, and a winding key or turn handle. An internal spring stores the energy when the music box is activated, playing the recorded melody.

Our collectible music boxes work by winding the turn handle, which causes the cylinder inside the box to rotate. As it turns, the cylinder brushes against fine metal prongs that produce the correct notes for the song. If you’re looking for a traditional music box that plays melodies with a mechanical movement instead of a modern, digital module, shop Music Box Attic first, but we do have both!
